What is a Malta Work Permit?

A Malta Work Permit or Malta working visa is a legal document that authorizes foreign workers to work in Malta. It is issued by the Malta Department of Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs—the authorized government organization—to individuals who have secured employment in Malta and have all of the necessary documents to obtain a work permit.

Who needs it?

Foreign nationals who are not citizens of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland are required to obtain a Malta Work Permit before they can work in Malta. Exceptions may apply for certain professions, such as artists, athletes, and researchers.

Types of Malta Work Permits

The 3 types of Malta work permits or Malta working visa are as follows:

  1. Single Permit: This permit enables long-term residence and employment in Malta to its holder.  You must have an offer from a Maltese employer in order to submit an application for a single permit. This must be submitted on your behalf by the employer in Malta if you are not present in the country yourself. Processing time is around two to three months for single permits.
  2. Key employment initiative: This is a new work permit, recently introduced for skilled workers.  This work visa takes only five days to process. But, you must meet its eligibility requirements in order to be eligible for the Key Employment Initiative:
    – Work experience and relevant skills are required for the position.
    – A minimum of €30,000 as an annual salary
    – Proof of work experiences of your last three years.
  3. EU Blue Card: Highly skilled individuals(non-EU Nationals) who will fill a qualified position and earn at least 1.5 times Malta’s average gross yearly pay are given the EU Blue Card. The Malta EU Blue Card is given out for a minimum of one year and may be extended forever as long as you continue to meet the work requirements.

Benefits of the Malta Work Permit

  • Career opportunities: Malta has a strong and growing economy, which means there are many job opportunities for foreign workers in various industries, including finance, gaming, and tourism.
  • Cultural experience: Malta is a melting pot of different cultures, which means foreign workers can experience a unique blend of Mediterranean, European, and North African cultures. It is a country famous for its historical landmarks connected to a series of empires, including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French, and British. The hal Saflieni Hypogeum, a subterranean complex of halls and burial chambers dating to around 4000 B.C., is one of the many fortifications, megalithic temples, and historical sites there.
  • Quality of life: Malta has a high standard of living, with excellent healthcare, education, and public services. It is also strategically located in the Mediterranean, which means it is easily accessible from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
