Which industry sectors are the most concentrated in Europe?
According to Eurostat, although the concentration data is new and experimental, it can help determine how much production in an industry or the overall economy is dominated by a small number of major enterprises.
According to recent data from the EU statistical office, the energy sector is the most concentrated business in the EU, with one in five jobs in that sector being associated with one of the four biggest energy multinational corporations operating in the EU.
The figures, which were released by Eurostat on Monday and span the years 2018 to 2021, also demonstrate that big businesses control a large share of several other industries. The second-largest industry is mining and quarrying, with 13.7% of all workers employed by these four major firms in the EU in 2021. At 10.3%, water supply, wastewater, waste management, and remediation operations are ranked third.
Germany is the member state that generates the greatest value among the five sectors of activity depicted in the above charts, according to data released by Eurostat earlier last year.Despite being new and experimental, the concentration data, according to Eurostat, is useful in understanding “the degree to which production in an industry or in the whole economy is dominated by a few large firms.”
According to Eurostat’s analysis, these datasets are particularly useful for dispelling the myth that certain businesses are operating independently when, in fact, they are part of the same major corporations and have similar profit objectives.Certain industries, like real estate or science, exhibit a notably low degree of concentration.
Germany was the nation adding the most value throughout the bloc among those three least concentrated sectors in Europe.
