January 28, London (Reuters) – The Office for National Statistics said Tuesday that net migration into the UK is expected to be the primary driver of the country’s population growth, which is expected to increase from 67.6 million in mid-2022 to 72.5 million by mid-2032.
Recent years have seen record levels of immigration to Britain, and the ONS forecasts could exacerbate the argument about whether the country’s overburdened public services can handle population growth and the need for foreign workers to power the economy.
A popular political issue that contributed to the Brexit vote in 2016 and fueled the rise of the right-wing Reform UK party, immigration reduction has been a pledge made by successive administrations, including the government of Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
According to the ONS, 4.9 million people’s net migration—the sum of those coming and those going—is expected to fuel population growth over the next ten years.
